Duration of excitation (ms) 10.5 ± 1.0 13.3 ± 1.7a 19.3 ± 2.1
Onset of inhibition (ms) 10.9 ± 3.3 19.7 ± 3.6a 44.3 ± 6.0
Duration of inhibition (ms) 85.0 ± 29.7 150.9 ± 20.4a 99.8 ± 7.8
  • All values are means ± SEM. Response magnitudes were calculated as described in Materials and Methods. BNST neurons projecting to the VTA are those antidromicaly driven by the VTA stimulation. A two-tailed unpaired Student's t test was performed to compare the basic electrophysiological properties between the two populations of BNST neurons.

  • aNo significant differences between BNST neuronal populations. ND, Not determined; NA, not applicable.
