TABLE 2.Properties of excitatory sound-evoked responses

Tuning Type

Total (n = 45)
Short-Pass (n = 3) Band-Pass (n = 9) Long-Pass (n = 7) Untuned (n = 26)

Rise time
EPSP, ms 3.2 ± 0.5 7.0 ± 1.5 21.7 ± 6.0 5.4 ± 1.3 8.3 ± 1.5
Delay, ms 10.2 ± 0.6 11.8 ± 2.6 14.2 ± 1.9 8.8 ± 0.3 10.3 ± 0.7

Values are means ± SE. Tones of 512 ms at CFEPSP were given typically at 40 dB above threshold. Both rise time (P < 0.001; ANOVA) and delay (P=0.02) differed significantly between the groups. The average rise time of the long-pass group differed significantly from that of each of the other groups (P < 0.01; Tukey's HSD). In addition, long-pass neurons had a significantly longer delay than that of untuned neurons (P=0.02; Tukey's HSD).
