TABLE 2.Proportions of spinally projecting RVM neurons responsive to 1 or 3 µM DAMGO

Type 1 Type 2 Type 3

Serotonergic 6/11 (55) 2/7 (29) 1/12* (8)
Nonserotonergic 3/5 (60) 3/13 (23) 5/17 (29)

A neuron was considered responsive if 1 or 3 µM DAMGO produced an outward current ≥10 pA that was reversed by 1 µM naloxone; inward currents were never observed after application of [D-Ala2, NMePhe4-Gly5-ol]enkephalin (DAMGO).

* P < 0.05,

**P < 0.01 compared to type 1 neurons within that immunohistochemical classification. Percentage in parentheses.
