Table 1Overview of morphological and electrophysiological properties of sideways-oriented layer 2 pyramidal cellsa
aObl, short and long refer to oblique, short and long horizontal pyramids, respectively; Diameter=average of the length of the long and short soma axes; Vrest=resting membrane potential; Rn peak and Rn ss were calculated from peak (Vpeak) and steady-state (Vss) voltage responses to small hyperpolarizing current pulses; Sag ratio=Vpeak/Vss calculated from 20–30mV hyperpolarizing current pulses (500–1000ms); tau=slowest time constant determined from initial voltage responses to small, 500–1000ms hyperpolarizing current pulses; Ir=rheobase current, minimum current required to fire a single action potential from Vrest; AP height=peak action potential amplitude measured from Vrest; AP threshold=action potential threshold relative to Vrest measured from the inflection point just prior to the action potential upstroke; AP half-width=width of the action potential measured at a point halfway between threshold and peak; rs=regular spiking; Afterpotentials (fAHP, fADP and mAHP) were measured from action potentials evoked by brief (3–5ms) current pulses.
